Movies for Adults
by Jason Stuart

Straw Dogs – Banned in the U.K. Need I say more?

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest – The Big Indian sells it.

Full Metal Jacket – The first half is funny, but the second half is what really makes it great.

Eyes Wide Shut – I always feel dirty afterward.

Ben Hur – A good movie about Jesus; i.e. one with a story.

Texasville – Based on the McMurtry novel. Not a bad adaptation either.

The Last Picture Show – I only add this out of respect for the novel. Poor adaptation.

The Color of Money – I just like it, okay?

Hombre – From the Elmore Leonard novel, a good, gritty western with real characters.

The Hudsucker Proxy – You know, for kids.

The Getaway (1972) – Sam Peckinpah's original. Pretty raw for the 60s. Ali MacGraw is fabulous.

The Wild Bunch – Peckinpah's masterpiece.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? – A definite classic.

A Streetcar Named Desire – One of Brando's better works.

The Fugitive Kind – Another of Brando's better works, and based on my favorite Tennessee Williams play, Orpheus Descending.

Spartan – David Mamet comes closer to separating screen from stage with this one.

Summer of Sam – Probably the only Spike Lee joint I appreciated.

Miller's Crossing – Maybe the Coen's best. Maybe not.

Breathless – Pretty decent for them foreigners.

L'Enfant Sauvage – I had to pick at least one Truffaut film.

Chinatown – Without the ending, it would be just another lame detective story.

The Ninth Gate – An interesting look at the occult, without devolving into sword and sorcery.

The Exorcist – Visually outstanding.

The Insider – Before Russell Crowe became a douche bag.

Michael Collins – The IRA martyr. Liam Neeson needs more good roles like this.

Rob Roy – And this.

Blow Out – Lesser known De Palma flick. Excellent use of sound editing, obviously.

Clockwork Orange – Good old ultra violence.

Dr. Strangelove – Who can argue?

The Quiet Man – The movie John Wayne should have got an Oscar for.

The Thin Red Line (1998) – Malick's version. Good visuals. Good character. I like Caviezel (pre-Jesus).

Junior Bonner – A quieter, more character-driven Peckinpah film.

The Warrior and the Princess – Because Franka Potente is just hot.

Run Lola Run – This one was even better.

Charade – Another classic.

North by Northwest – Extraordinary film.

Vertigo – Hitchcock reinvents the shot in this one.

The Man Who Knew Too Much – More Hitchcock in top form.

The Grass is Greener – An interesting team up of Mitchum and Grant.

Ride with the Devil – The only good movie about the Civil War (unless The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly counts).

Kelly's Heroes – Because deep down, war is all about the money.

The Bridge on the River Kwai – Because of the whistle.

The Great Escape – McQueen is just plain cool, what can I say?

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia – Peckinpah's big "fuck-off" to the critics. I love this one.
