8 ½

Tommy Burton -- This is one of the most astonishing films ever made. It chronicles the life of a filmmaker without a film. It will blow your mind. The Criterion Collection version of this film is the way to go. The good folks at Criterion have given you enough goodies to keep you busy for months. Plus, the film looks as perfect as it can. This one has two discs including a film introduction by Terry Gilliam. It also has Fellini: A Director's Notebook, a 52-minute film by the man himself. Tons of interviews and production notes and photos make this a must-have for fans of great cinema.

The Elephant Man

Tommy Burton -- This is certainly one of the more "user-friendly" David Lynch films. It earned him an Oscar nomination, along with John Hurt in the lead role. Anthony Hopkins is also brilliant. Funny enough, this was the role that led Jonathan Demme to cast him as Hannibal Lector, a role Anthony has cherished. This is a beautiful film that was a long time coming on DVD. It’s great to see the film presented in its original aspect ratio. The transfer is nice and balanced. The extras are pretty slim, but there is a nice half-hour documentary on the film.
