Popeye

Rusty W. Spell -- Someone put this charming "bomb" on DVD, so it's fine that it doesn't have any features.

Punch-Drunk Love

Rusty W. Spell -- As with all P.T. Anderson movies (especially since Boogie Nights), this one is beautifully packaged and presented. The box alone shows how much care he puts into his DVDs. This one features great artwork by Jeremy Blake. Even the Peter Blake menus could be used as a sort of musical wallpaper. But unless they couldn't physically fit all the stuff on here because of how good they made the picture look (some kind of lack of compression?) I don't know why this needed to be two discs (other than two disc sets probably sell better than one disc sets). The movie is short and the supplemental materials only last 34 minutes, a little short for the usual Anderson DVD. I'm not complaining about the lack of extras, since everything that needs to be here is here (there's a deleted/alternate scenes reel combined into a feature called "Blossoms and Blood" and "scopitones," trailers, and a hilarious Mattress Man commercial with Philip Seymour Hoffman almost killing himself--not sure if this was on purpose or not, but it's pretty great). I don't mind the lack of commentary or documentary either (though I'd have certainly welcomed one). Again, just wondering why it had to be on two discs. I'm thinking about money, I guess. Overall, no real complaints.
